mencoder to produce video compatible with Powerpoint

avi is fine with powerpoint but very heavy. mencoder can produce files encoded with windows-compatible codecs:

mencoder file.avi -of lavf -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2 -o file.wmv
